Believe
“Believe in Belief”
While at Stanford I had the honor to be coached and mentored by one of swimming's greatest coaches of all time, Richard Quick. The man has a legacy all his own and though he's no longer with us I can still hear his voice and picture him running up and down the pool deck. Whatever craziness Richard had us doing in and out of the pool he always had a mantra - some of his sayings a bit more out there than others, but one that was constantly woven into conversation was 'Believe in Belief'. Believe in yourself, in your team, and in whatever you want to achieve and it will be put into action.
I was reminded recently of the re-frame on 'seeing is believing' and that it really should read 'believing is seeing' and 'I'll see it when I believe it'. Immediately upon hearing this Richard was in my head. Yes, that is indeed true. When you believe, it will happen and you will see it. It's all about perspective.
These words and the truth behind them have come and gone from my conscious view over the years. Maybe it's because at times I'd forgotten the necessity to believe - whether that was in myself, in what I was doing, in what I wanted, in someone else. Or because I was letting life happen to me rather than having the strength to step up and believe that I wanted something different or something better. Whatever the reasons may have been I can tell you today I'm a wholehearted believer - with the greatest sense of joy, excitement, and confidence behind the belief. Not everything is rosy or without challenge but belief allows you to know that you're moving forward and with purpose.
How can you make a change, take a risk, step into your wonder, and discover what it is that you truly want without belief?
Do you believe in belief? What's stopping you?
