Magic in the Mundane
Here’s a little reminder:
it’s often the smallest and seemingly mundane aspects of life that are what truly excite us and bring joy.
Messaging tells us to always seek the next thing, get to the next mountain top, and that the next promotion, vacation, or new thing is what’s going to bring satisfaction, joy, peace, and delight.
I hate to break it to you, that’s a lie.
It leaves us empty and disappointed every time we think we’ve arrived yet the feelings don’t match the expectations and buildup. Trust me, I’ve experienced it firsthand - many times!
Opening yourself to noticing and being aware of all the small things in life are what truly lead to an incredible experience of life, every dang day.
We don’t need to seek so far outside of ourselves or beyond what we already have to experience what we desire, we just need to open our eyes and our minds to see it.
And know this, it has taken practice for me to Pause and stop to linger in the flower’s beauty, or whatever the little moment might be. It seems easier to rush to the next thing on the agenda, but the Pause is always worth it. This is why I created The Linger Movement and preach Pause.
What are the things that you consider small or mundane but when you Pause to consider them do indeed bring you joy, peace, etc?
Maybe that’s hearing birds chirp, the smile and hug from your kids, the delicious taste of a weeknight meal.
Pause. Notice. Embrace these moments.
This is mindfulness. It’s very simple and doesn’t require lots of time or a special settings. It’s practicing noticing, awareness, and presence. You’ll prime the brain to look for them and re-train it until it becomes more like second nature.
So go ahead, seek the lofty goals, plan the incredible vacation, and take the risks, but ensure you’re also finding satisfaction, joy, peace, delight, and whatever feelings you desire in ordinary everyday moments too.
The ordinary is indeed extraordinary. Tapping into this is epecially powerful when things feel crappy, dark, or just not going our way.
